Artist Statement

My work explores the re-presentation of ideas as constructed, visual, oral and conceptual stimuli, considering the associated histories of these ideas through both intellectual and emotional responses. The works form part of an ongoing and open ended enquiry that examines the overlapping function of concept and physical structure within my practice. This enquiry focuses on the relational and oppositional issues of analytical (conscious) - intuitive (subconscious) intellect and experiments with methods to achieve a state of neutral, balanced contemplation of the links between past events and descriptive structure, as both presentation and concept. The physical works often elicit reactions to actual or metaphorical spaces, creating complex experiences where the viewer becomes part of the concept, the environment and a participant in the re-presentation and development of the history of the ideas through the presentation of memories as documents and documents as memories.
My practice is grounded in the concept, appropriation, combination, and construction of art objects. I work with a diverse range of art processes including drawing, sculpture, video and audio in order to realise these ephemeral, conceptual, aesthetic objects. However, these objects are not produced or considered in terms of a traditional aesthetic. Beauty and skill of production are ignored to a large extent in order for thework to become in some way reducible to the allegorical code that forms it as information, allowing the physical and conceptual elements of the work to be clearly seen. Art works are fundamentally about the idea, but it is not possible to completely remove the object or its method of construction. The object is not the art, but merely functions as the language structure that describes the idea, providing an accessible tool for the examination of its meaning and function.
